What is a Hairline Hair Transplant?

The hairline hair transplant is one of the most popular hair transplant options that patients choose to have with us at our hair loss clinic in Manchester.

A hairline hair transplant aims to treat patients who have a naturally high hairline or are suffering from a condition called male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia). The surgery looks to take hair follicles from the back and sides of the head and transplant them into the hairline and temple area.

In some cases, a hairline hair transplant also refers to cases where the hairline area is lowered, shortening the distance between the hairline and the eyebrows. This does tend to be more common in female patients.

Three types of surgical methods can be used to fix a hairline area: FUE hair transplant, FUT hair transplant, and DHI hair transplant. More information on each of these hair loss treatments is provided below.

Who Can Have a Hairline Hair Transplant at the Manchester Hair Transplant Clinic?

At the Manchester Hair Transplant Clinic, hairline hair transplants are available for men, women, and transgender patients.

For men, a hairline hair transplant surgery is usually chosen by patients on stage 2 or 3 of the Hamilton-Norwood Scale. This would be categorised as low-to-medium stages of pattern hair loss that has not affected the crown area.

If a patient suffers from extensive baldness on the crown, then a two-stage procedure (essentially a separate hairline and crown transplant) would need to take place. In most cases, the hairline is usually the area tackled first.

Women who come to our clinic in Manchester usually want surgery as they have a naturally high hairline from birth. In these cases, a hairline hair transplant is often a viable option. Especially, given no hair loss condition is present in these cases which negates chances of hair loss or hair thinning after the surgery.

A female hairline hair transplant would look to lower the hairline and blend this new hair seamlessly into the existing hairline.

We also provide hairline hair transplants for MTF transgender patients at the Manchester hair loss clinic. In transgender cases, a patient may have suffered from male pattern baldness before their transition, leaving a typically “masculine” looking hairline.

In this instance, a hairline hair transplant would look to “feminise” the appearance of the hairline, filling in any signs of temple recession and reshaping the hairline.

What Surgery Methods Does the Manchester Hair Transplant Clinic Offer?

At the Manchester hair loss clinic, we offer three surgical methods for patients. Over the last couple of decades, several hair restoration treatments have been developed and used for hairlines. Here are the most common three surgical options:

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The FUE hair transplant is the most popular surgical method offered today. This method looks to take donor hairs individually from the back and sides of your head and implant them, one by one, into your hairline area.

One of the benefits of an FUE hairline transplant (Manchester) is that it boasts a quick recovery time and leaves minimal scarring after the procedure. This means you can get back to daily life quickly and your FUE hair transplant will have caused minimal disruption to those with busier lives.

At the Manchester hair transplant clinic, the FUE hair transplant procedure is performed by a GMC-registered doctor in a CQC-registered clinic. This ensures your hair loss surgery is performed in a clean environment by a safe pair of hands!

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)

The DHI method is the premium option when it comes to hair restoration treatments. Similar to FUE, this surgical method extracts your hair follicles from the back and sides of your head and implants them into the hairline area.

The main difference is in the tool used during surgery. Thanks to the use of a CHOI pen, the time taken between extraction and implantation is almost simultaneous. Whereas FUE and FUT require an “incision phase”, this is not needed with DHI.

The benefit of this is that a DHI hairline transplant (Manchester) is minimally invasive and boasts a slightly quicker recovery time and graft survival rate when compared to FUT and FUE.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Sometimes called the “strip method”, FUT is the oldest form of hair transplant and is only now used as an option for female and transgender patients who may prefer to keep their hair long post-surgery.

This method looks to take a strip of skin with hair from the back of the head and use these for transplantation. This method does leave a linear scar on the back of the scalp.

How Does an FUE Hairline Hair Transplant Procedure Work?

During a hairline hair transplant, the method used in almost all cases is called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUE hair transplants look to extract donor hairs individually before they are re-implanted into the receding hairline.

This hair transplant surgery costs a graft survival rate of 95-100%, fending off future hair loss for almost a decade – in some cases maybe even longer. As with any hair transplant, it is always recommended to continue with another chemical treatment like finasteride post-surgery.

Who Will Perform My Hairline Hair Transplant in Manchester?

One of our 2 experienced and talented surgeons will perform your hairline hair transplant surgery.

Both Dr Elgindi and Dr Ditta are on the GMC medical register as well as being ISHRS registered.

The hair restoration clinic in Manchester is also CQC registered. This means your hairline hair transplant is being performed in a clean, safe, and hygienic environment.

FUE Hair Transplant: The Day of Your Procedure

Initial Consultation and Anaesthetic

On the day of your hair transplant at the Manchester hair transplant clinic, you will begin the day by meeting your hair transplant surgeon and technical team. After an initial consultation go over the final hairline design and and fill in your consent forms.

From here, you will have the back of your head shaved and will then be given a local anaesthetic. The benefit of using a local anaesthetic is that you will remain conscious for the procedure, but will not be able to feel any pain in the scalp area.

Extraction Phase

The “extraction phase” refers to the removal of the hair follicles from your donor area. Extraction is taken as evenly as possible from the back and sides of your head to avoid any sign of noticeable over-extraction of the donor area.

With most hairline surgeries, anywhere between 1800 to 2500 hair grafts are usually used during a hair transplant. This is, of course, dependent upon the size of the area we need to work on. A full count of the number of grafts used will be provided to you at the end of the surgery.

The extraction phase usually takes between 2-3 hours and will be where your transplantable hair follicles are extracted and prepped for re-implantation. The extraction is performed by our surgeon and usually one technician. Another technician will usually be on hand to separate your grafts into “singles”, “doubles”, and “triples”.

After the extraction phase, there will usually be a short lunch break before the incision and implantation phases begin.

Incision Phase

During the preimplantation phase, a series of small incisions are made by the surgeon to prep your recipient area for receiving grafts. On the hairline, incisions are usually made with a smaller implanting pen (usually between 0.7cm and 0.9mm).

Incisions are always made by the surgeon at the clinic in Manchester. The aim here is to create a natural-looking hairline and requires an experienced pair of medically trained hands.

Implantation Phase

From here, your donor hairs will be implanted into your hairline area. The aim is to implant them evenly across your new hairline so the result is full and thick-looking. This will help ensure the best hairline possible. Once this phase is complete, you will then speak to your surgeon about your aftercare.

How Many Grafts Are Needed for a Hairline Hair Transplant?

The number of grafts required for a hairline transplant depends on the extent of recession, the desired hairline position, and your donor density. As a general guide:

  • Mild recession (Norwood 2): Typically 1,000–1,500 grafts — addressing early temple recession and slight frontal thinning
  • Moderate recession (Norwood 3): Typically 1,500–2,500 grafts — restoring the frontal hairline and filling temple areas
  • Hairline lowering (female patients): Usually 1,200–2,000 grafts depending on the distance being reduced and natural hair density

At the Manchester clinic, a full graft count is provided to every patient at the end of their procedure. Your surgeon will assess your donor density and hair loss pattern at your free consultation to give you an accurate estimate before you commit to anything.

Hairline Hair Transplant Cost: What are the Costs at the Manchester Hair Transplant Clinic?

The cost of a hairline hair transplant in Manchester begins from £4,500 and can be as much as £6,000 for more severe cases.

The Manchester hair transplantation clinic does not operate on a “cost per graft” basis. Instead, pricing is based on the size of the hairline area that needs filling. Full pricing is available on our hair transplant cost page, and your patient advisor will provide a personalised quote following your free consultation.

Hairline Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline

Recovery from a hairline hair transplant is generally well tolerated. Because the hairline is a relatively small treatment area, healing tends to be faster than larger crown or scalp procedures. Here is what to expect:

  • Days 1–3: Redness and minor swelling around the hairline and forehead — common and settles within a few days
  • Days 3–10: Small scabs form around each implanted graft. Leave these to fall away naturally — do not pick them
  • Weeks 2–4: Transplanted hairs begin to shed — this is normal and does not indicate failure. It is part of the natural growth cycle
  • Months 2–4: Shedding ends and new growth begins to emerge from the implanted follicles
  • Months 4–8: Visible regrowth accelerates; hair texture and thickness begin to normalise
  • Months 12–14: Full results visible. The transplanted hairline is permanent and grows as natural hair

Frequently Asked Questions

The number of grafts depends on the extent of recession and the desired result. Mild recession (Norwood 2) typically requires 1,000–1,500 grafts; moderate recession (Norwood 3) typically 1,500–2,500 grafts. For female hairline lowering, 1,200–2,000 grafts are usually needed. Your surgeon will give you a precise estimate at your free consultation.

Most patients return to desk-based work within 5–7 days. Scabbing settles within 10 days, and the initial shedding phase ends by weeks 3–4. Visible regrowth appears from month 3–4 onwards, with full results typically visible at 12–14 months.

Yes. Hair follicles transplanted into the hairline are taken from the donor zone at the back and sides of the scalp — an area genetically resistant to DHT-driven hair loss. Once transplanted, these follicles retain their resistance and continue to grow permanently. The transplanted hairline will not recede.

Yes. Women are suitable candidates for a hairline hair transplant, most commonly to lower a naturally high hairline or to address hairline recession. Because no hair loss condition is typically present in these cases, the risk of future thinning in the transplanted area is very low. DHI is often the preferred method for female patients as it does not require full shaving of the recipient area.

The cost of a hairline hair transplant at the Manchester clinic starts from £4,500. Full pricing details are available on our hair transplant cost page. Your patient advisor will provide a personalised quote based on your specific requirements following your free consultation.

It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Naturally, I was unsure on which organisation to choose for the procedure, but HSHTC came across as professional and caring, as well as having a wide range of availability. There are negative reviews on all businesses, and this drives customers like myself away. However, something told me this would likely be someone with unrealistic expectations, or not reading into the procedure as a whole. I chose to ignore the negatives and read the positives. Sara the coordinator was absolutely amazing! She outlined everything and made it clear of what is expected and what is not. After a great consultation, I was passed to the next stage of meeting surgeon Dr Ditta. He presented extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, so I decided to go ahead with the procedure. The surgery day was expected to be a long, but rewarding day. It started with having to shave my head (mandatory requirement for this procedure). I’d say to anyone the thought is worser than the event, and to just do it for the positives that will follow. Dr Ditta and his team were extremely caring and sensitive, especially with briefing before any painful situations pre anaesthetic. After that, I was allowed to top up when requested and leave them to do what they do best. The day as a whole was enjoyable and interesting to speak to the team to learn more about the procedure and get to know them. Lunch was provided (yay). It was lovely of them to offer, and you definitely need to eat mid procedure to keep energy levels. At the end of the day, I was given clear instruction of how to have the best success rate. It was through a video and in person. If you have questions, ask as it’s what the team is there for. The first few days of recovery can be quite awkward and uncomfortable, but I’d recommend booking 2 weeks off work to fully recover and let the grafts set. Once you get use to the sleeping situation, it’s easy and a lovely break from reality (put pillows below your knees and stack below head for pure comfort!). The aftercare products was extremely useful and easy to use. The grafts will fall out after a few weeks, it’s expected and you’re told this plenty of times!! Having a healthy lifestyle makes your hair grow quicker and thicker, so swap your diet to good healthy hair foods. When your transplanted hair grows back, it’s an amazing feeling, but only the beginning. As the months pass by, you’ll notice a massive improvement. During this process, you’ll have regular aftercare and the chance to raise any concerns. I personally didn’t have any issues and was just grateful to still be in contact and told everything is going as it should. I’m 6 months post surgery and I’m seeing the benefits hugely, and it’s not even reached maximum results yet, as this is one year. Thanks for an amazing service!

Having given some time and thought about having a Hair Transplant, I contacted Harley street hair transplant clinics. The consultant (Sara) explained everything regarding the procedure with Dr.Ditta and the technicians. From the beginning, Dr.Ditta explained the days events and how the procedures would be done beginning with taking a photo of my head and showing me where the grafts would be taken from and where they would be placed. The procedures would be done and completed in two parts, with a lunch break in between. Once completed, Dr.Ditta went through the aftercare, explaining what to do each day for 10 days. I was given capsules, shampoo, sponge, neck pillow for sleeping with and information regarding how to look after my hair. Dr. Ditta and his team were welcoming and friendly ensuring I was looked after throughout both parts of the procedure. Sara maintained regular contact to make sure recovery was going well. The results were great, patience is needed as the grafts start to grow, and then you can see the results. Extremely happy with everything, from start to finish.

Would highly recommend! Everything went very smoothly, communication was excellent throughout. I travelled from Edinburgh to Manchester for the procedure and all travel and accommodation costs were covered. Dr Ditta explained everything clearly and delivered clear and detailed post-op instructions. I was delighted with the whole experience and results so far are very promising!

Overall, my experience at the clinic was positive. Dr. Ditta was exceptional — he made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the procedure, and his professionalism was truly reassuring. However, I was disappointed with one member of the team who, in my opinion, did not fully follow health and safety protocols. She had her hair down without a surgical cap and was using her phone while wearing gloves, then proceeded to touch my hair without changing them. This raised concerns about hygiene and cross-contamination. Her manner was also not very pleasant, which made the experience less comfortable. Although I was initially worried about the risk of infection, I felt more at ease by the end of my visit. I hope the management reviews this matter to ensure that strict hygiene and professional standards are consistently maintained. Aside from this, I was very satisfied with Dr. Ditta’s care and look forward to seeing my results.

Dear Team. Following my hair transplant last Saturday I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the team, for making my journey as pleasant as possible. From the first consultation, to having my hotel booked, to the procedure itself, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Finally a big thank you to Doctor Ditta and the team, who were so kind when I felt unwell, making me drinking chocolate and reassuring me throughout the process. Add to this, their expertise and professionalism, what more can one ask for? I look forward to the final part of my hair transplant next year. Once again a big thanks to you all. Kind regards Keith Yates

Before the procedure I had online and face to face consultations with no obligations. These gave me all the information I needed and really put me at ease and gave me the confidence to proceed. Everyone was really knowledgeable and friendly and clearly very experienced. Booking the procedure was quick and easy and I got a date that suited me. The procedure itself went really smoothly I was able to put headphones in and listen to podcasts and was very comfortable. Afterwards I was given really detailed notes on what to do and what would happen and everything went exactly as planned. It was so reassuring knowing that advice was only a text message away and responses were always immediate. I'm two weeks post procedure now and everything has gone back to normal and the recovery is going just as planned. I'm so glad I did this and chose Harley Street Hair Transplant!

Great clinic with friendly and experienced team. I wanted my surgery done in the UK and found the clinic on Google. Process started with virtual consultations with patient advisor and then with the surgeon. FULL costs were given up front, with good finance options available. On the day I designed a new hairline with the surgeon and ended up getting about 1600 grafts iirc, which was good value for money. Clear pre- and post-op instructions given and recovery has gone as expected. Now waiting patiently for regrowth :) - Grant
